Years of service, combined with variations in the properties of the material being handled, can result in excessive wear of a storage silo.  This is usually evidenced by the formation of flow channels on the interior surface of the silo wall.  These flow channels eventually cause vertical cracks in  the exterior silo wall.

Another condition that can occur, due to years of usage and constant cycling of the silo,  delamaniated concrete on the exterior wall.  If these or similar conditions should appear, schedule an inspection of the silo to determine if there is in fact a problem.

Signs Your Silo Needs an Inspection

Any inspection should be performed by personnel who are experienced in this type of investigation.  It is important for the inspectors to be qualified to identify the source of the problem and to be able to recommend the proper remedial action to be taken to correct the problem.

If a problem does exist, whether due to normal wear or some other circumstance, the initial recommendation is usually to restrict the usable capacity of the silo or to take the silo out of service.
