Post Tensioning

Next, safety angles are placed near the locations of the mechanical couplers.  Safety angles protect the crew in case a coupler fails during construction.  The safety angles are left in place as a precaution against unforeseen failures.

The cables are then tensioned to their design capacity.  The couplers are encased in concrete, which not only protects them from the environment, but also gives the installation a "finished" appearance.

If you suspect that you might have an existing or potential problem with a particular silo, we would be more than happy to provide you with a quotation for a complete inspection.  If the results indicate a need for corrective measures, such as the installation of post-tensioned cables outlined above, we could also provide you with a firm estimate of cost to perform those corrective measures.
Often the inspection of an existing silo reveals the existence of flow channels that have caused excessive wear or flexing on the silo wall. The installation of exterior post-tensioned cables may correct the problem.  Post tensioning a problem silo will often allow you to return the silo to its full design capacity usage and extend its life considerably at just a fraction of the replacement cost.

The procedure is relatively simple. First, crews install the required number of circumferential post-tensioning strands at the locations determined by a structural engineer.
